Thema

Present Tense beschreibt als Zeitform das Jetzt nicht als Zeitpunkt, sondern als Zustand: eine gespannte, instabile Gegenwart, in der Wahrnehmung, Realität und Zukunft gleichzeitig verhandelt werden. Als solche wird sie nicht als abgeschlossene Geschichte erzählt, sondern als offener, fortlaufender Prozess.
Die Ausschreibung versteht diesen Begriff als Beschreibung einer Gegenwart im Spannungszustand: als unruhigen, fragilen Moment, der von Unsicherheit, Verdichtung und Veränderung geprägt ist. Present Tense verweist zugleich auf den gegenwärtigen Zustand des Mediums der Fotografie selbst – auf eine Praxis, die sich neu verortet zwischen Dokumentation, Wahrnehmung, Begegnung und gesellschaftlicher Verantwortung.
Fotografie eröffnet durch unmittelbare Präsenz, durch Begegnung und Austausch mit dem Gegenüber einen direkten und relationalen Zugang zur Wirklichkeit. Damit grenzt sie sich von generativen Bildsystemen ab, die aus zumeist fremden Daten der Vergangenheit ein spekulatives Jetzt ableiten. Fotografie hingegen entsteht im Dialog mit anderen Menschen, Situationen, Perspektiven und Erfahrungen. So führt der fotografische Prozess nicht nur zum Bild; er wird zur Handlung – als Mittel, um Wahrnehmung zu schärfen, Erleben zu ermöglichen, Aufmerksamkeit zu lenken und gesellschaftliche Realitäten erfahrbar zu machen.
Wir laden Künstler:innen und Fotograf:innen ein, Arbeiten einzureichen, die im direkten Kontakt mit ihrer Umwelt entstehen, andere Perspektiven einbeziehen und Fotografie als aktives Handlungsinstrument begreifen. Arbeiten, die die Gegenwart nicht nur abbilden, sondern sie in ihrer Komplexität, ihren Bruchstellen und ihren Widersprüchen erfahrbar werden lassen. Positionen, die Nähe herstellen, Wahrnehmungen verschieben und die Strukturen und Herausforderungen der Gegenwart sichtbar machen – ohne einfache Antworten auf komplexe Fragen zu geben.

Ausstellung zum 10. Merck-Preis

Für die Ausstellung im Museum Künstlerkolonie auf der Mathildenhöhe werden aus dem Open Call sechs Arbeiten nominiert.

What is the timeline?

How much is the participation fee?

  • The fee is 25 Euros per project.

Will you support travelling and production costs?

Shortlisted artists who confirm their participation in the exhibition at Mathildehöhe Darmstadt will receive: - A subsidy of up to 200 € for travel expenses - A subsidy of up to 500 € for the production of artwork related to the Merck-Preis.

Are there any technical restrictions for the finalists' exhibition?

  • The jury determines where a finalist’s artwork will be displayed in the exhibition.
  • No adhesive bonding is allowed on the exhibition walls.
  • If the artist’s work includes video or an installation: Only standalone functionality with one-button operation.

Who retains the rights to my works?

  • Artists retain full copyright of their work. By submitting, entrants grant the Merck-Preis organisers permission to use images for promotional purposes related to the festival. If an artist is selected for the shortlist, visual material for PR purposes must be delivered by 1 April following the announcement and made available with usage rights for DTdF PR measures.

I am a shortlisted artist; is my artwork insured?

  • Yes, but the works are only insured at their replacement value.

If I am invited to Darmstadt, will my accommodation be covered?

  • Yes, the shortlisted artists who confirm their attendance at the opening ceremony will be invited to stay in a hotel chosen by the organisers from 24 to 26 April 26.04.2026.

Who awards the Merck-Preis?

  • The Merck-Preis is announced and awarded by the non-profit organisation »Darmstädter Tage der Fotografie« (DTdF). The company Merck KGaA sponsors the prize but does not itself act as the awarding body.

Why is a fee charged?

  • The actual organisation of the festival, along with all production and exhibition costs related to the competition, surpasses the amount that can be raised through sponsorship. Additionally, funds from foundations and public sponsors are incorporated into the overall festival budget. At the same time, organisers are always expected to contribute their own support. For example, the participation fee is such a contribution. Running a contemporary photography competition with an experienced jury and the option of a (paid) exhibition with a potential prize is, despite sponsorship and the participation fee, essentially a subsidised activity.

Why do artists contributing to the Merck-Preis have to pay a fee?

The actual exhibiting artists receive multiple benefits from the participation fee, including: - support for production costs - contribution towards travel expenses and accommodation up to a limit - PR across various channels - an exhibition with a vernissage - a supporting programme and participation in the symposium - and access to a great network.

What is the added value of rejected work for the participant?

  • Every piece of work submitted is appreciated. Paying a fee to participate emphasises the seriousness of the contributors. It should not be underestimated that all submitted portfolios are examined by all curators, who can then utilise their expanded knowledge in other contexts.

Is a participant fee common for open-calls?

  • There are both free and paid competitions. We have decided to charge an entry fee for the reasons mentioned above – and we look forward to receiving your entry!

What is the Mathildenhöhe and where is it located?

  • The Mathildenhöhe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is situated in Darmstadt, Hesse. You can find more information about it here: https://www.mathildenhoehe.de/en.
